BOAT IS SWAMPED BY A SEA MONSTER

Strange Tale Told By Fishermen Returning From Point Richman.

The Reedley Exponent Aug 29, 1907

San Rafeal, California

SAN RAFAEL, Aug. 26. — Charles Jansen, of the firm of Jansen-Schlosser lumber company, and Harry D. Nash, foreman of the same concern, both of this city, told today of a strange and fierce encounter with some kind of sea monster while fishing from a small launch about two miles off Point Richmond. In testimony of their exciting experience, Nash returned to San Rafael drenched to the skin from his fall into the waves which resulted when the unknown beast of the sea got under the boat and raised it from the water.

The frightened amateur fishers had nothing on board their craft with which to attack the animal except two short boat hooks. These they managed to plunge into the body of their mighty assailant until it bellowed in pain and whipped the boat out of the water. The noise attracted the attention of fishermen some distance away, who arrived just in the nick of time. The fishermen corroborate the story in every detail. They pulled Nash out of the water, took Jansen from the launch and brought them to land. Then they returned to try conclusions with the monster, but it had withdrawn and was nowhere to be seen.

There was no disparity between the descriptions of the monster as given by the victims of its vigor and that stated by the fishermen who rushed to the rescue. They declared that it was a fur covered fish with a birth of at least 3½ feet in diameter but how long it was no one could tell, because its tail and head were never out of the water at the same instant. It must have been very long and of enormous weight, they say, for it tossed the eighteen foot launch out of the waves with ease.
