Did someone spot a sea monster in Victoria? In 1950, Judge J.T. Brown claimed that he, along with his wife and daughter, saw a 35-foot reptilian sea monster while walking on a beach. According to an article in The Leader-Post on February 15, 1950, the chief justice mentioned that after coming back to Regina from his vacation in Victoria, he faced a lot of skepticism for sharing what he and his family had seen.
"My chief task now is to restore my former good name for veracity," he chuckled. "A fellow goes out there with a reputation rivalling that of George Washington and comes back as the biggest liar on the Pacific coast."
These words come from the doubt Brown faced when he and his family shared their dramatic sea monster story.
The Sea Monster Called Caddy
Was this just a one-off thing, or is this sea monster a regular sight? The article mentions that a golf course worker said Judge Brown was lucky to spot this reptilian creature, although Mrs. Nancy Hodges, the speaker of the British Columbia legislature, isn't buying it. She really doubts the story and anyone who claims they've seen Caddy. But Judge Brown's associate Judge Wylie stood firmly behind his friend's story. He states, "I cannot see how Caddy can be explained away in the free and easy manner of Nancy Hodges."
Judge H.V. Bigelow, who’s also from Victoria and used to work with Judge Brown in the King's bench court, sent another newspaper clipping. It was about three more folks who saw the reptilian monster called Caddy just 10 days after Judge Brown and his family reported seeing it.
